GRECFL² brings carbon farming to Greek audiences in Athens and Kalamata

October 27, 2026

At the end of September 2026, our Greek Carbon Farming Living Lab (GRECFL²) took LILAS4SOILS to two national events, bringing carbon farming closer to researchers, farmers, advisers and students in Greece.

3rd AgriInnovation Expo, Athens

On 24–25 September, the Agricultural University of Athens hosted the 3rd AgriInnovation Expo. Over the two days, the GRECFL² team presented the LILAS4SOILS project, its objectives and the activities of the Greek Living Lab. Visitors learned about the carbon farming practices being implemented and evaluated in the GRECFL² experimental fields. The Expo was an opportunity to talk about carbon farming, soil health and sustainable agriculture with researchers, agricultural professionals and students from across the Greek agri-food ecosystem, and to open new exchanges between research, practice and innovation.

1st Greek National Agroecology Forum, Kalamata

From 24 to 26 September, Dr Christos Vasilikiotis (Perrotis College) presented the experience of LILAS4SOILS at the 1st Greek National Agroecology Forum in Kalamata, focusing on regenerative agriculture practices in GRECFL².

He highlighted the potential of cover crops and reduced or no-tillage to improve soil health, increase soil organic carbon and make farming systems more resilient. He also outlined the Living Lab’s research: monitoring soil carbon fractions, aggregate stability, microbial activity, soil biodiversity and crop productivity. A large part of the discussion focused on the practical challenges farmers face when adopting regenerative practices, from technical questions to economic and management constraints.

Why it matters

Both events reflect the LILAS4SOILS approach: regenerative agriculture works best with locally adapted solutions, close collaboration between researchers and farmers, and an evaluation of both environmental and economic results. Carbon farming practices are tested under real farming conditions, considering how they perform and how farmers can put them into practice.
